NASCENT is the latest project to come out of the PLACE 21 stable. The NASCENT project is all about bringing industry and education closer together. What students learn in the classroom needs to be supplemented by what they learn from people who have made the transition from learning to earning.
The word NASCENT suggests something emerging. It means “in the earliest stages of development”, according to the Cambridge English Dictionary. In this project NASCENT is also an acronym: it stands for New Anglia Skills Convergence Enterprise Network for Training. That’s quite a mouthful! But the words imply that this is something for the New Anglia region, and it involves a convergence of skills (from the classroom to the workplace); and it encompasses the idea of Enterprise and training.
NASCENT is all about developing young people’s industry skills and experience. It means working with businesses from lots of different sectors. It’s about bringing students and businesses together through special curriculum initiatives. This can be great for the business and it’s an opportunity for students to gain experience, show what they can do, and make a positive impact.
Through NASCENT, we will also pilot a series of short courses, focused around the ten growth sectors identified by NALEP. By listening to SME networks and responding to their skills challenges, we will deliver appropriate training, in the right place at the right time.
The project includes the development of a digital media production centre which will be responsible for content creation, capturing project experiences and sharing best practice. Equally important will be the Sustainability and Diversity resource which will be developed over the lifetime of the project.
See https://www.wsc.ac.uk/about-the-college/place-21/skills-convergence-in-action for videos capturing project activity.
NASCENT will build upon this solid platform. If you are interested in finding out more please email: [email protected]
