Norwich Research Park (NRP) is a world-leading research base, at the forefront of global food and health research. It is Europe’s largest single site hub of research, training, education, and enterprise in food and health. The £81m Quadram Institute opened on the park in 2018. It will help to create a fundamental shift in the way we understand and address the impact of food on health.

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) is headquartered in Lowestoft, Suffolk. This is the UK’s most diverse centre for applied marine and freshwater science and research, providing innovative solutions for the aquatic environment, biodiversity and food security. There is also a cluster of animal health firms at Newmarket and several large pharmaceutical companies at Haverhill, taking advantage of links to the Cambridge life sciences cluster.

Suffolk has developed a reputation for excellence in biotechnology and in particular stem cell research and regenerative medicine at the University of Suffolk. Two new degree courses in regenerative medicine have been created and the university has forged strong links with Ipswich hospital to build specialist capabilities.

The Life Sciences sector within Norfolk and Suffolk has a current workforce of 10,000 and 700 enterprises.
