A recent report has urged increased employer engagement with young people, highlighting gaps where students lack exposure to local businesses.

Businesses who want to close the engagement gap can sign up to the New Anglia Enterprise Adviser Network, which recruits senior business leaders to work voluntarily with schools, supporting them to develop and enhance their business engagement plans.

The ‘Closing the Gap’ report, published by the Careers and Enterprise Company, contains many observations on employer engagement, including the following facts:

  • Around three quarters of young people miss out on at least one encounter at some point in secondary school.
  • Another 1.7 million employer interactions each year are needed to close the gap.
  • If employers got involved equally, then each organisation could do one employer encounter per year for every seven employees and bring in one student for a workplace experience for every 25 employees.
