School/College/Business: Downham Market Academy
Topic: ‘Careers in Curriculum’ event
Gatsby Benchmark(s): 2, 4 and 5
Downham Market Academy recently organised an event for students of all ages encouraging them to
make links between their school subjects and future career prospects.
The event involved employers from a range of backgrounds and sectors delivering talks to the
students. The talks focused on linking the employers’ companies and specific job roles to different
school subjects; a good example of this was Balfour Beatty employees talking to maths students
about roles within engineering.
Through this event, students were able to make real world connections between what they learn at
school and how this can support them entering certain careers. They also gained an understanding of
the local labour market whilst getting valuable exposure to a variety of employers.
