A feasibility study on the options on the road crossing within the wet dock island in Ipswich was conducted with the aim of reducing traffic congestion and free up land for economic regeneration. The study into the three-bridge scheme resulted in the announcement of £81m Government funding in the 2016 Budget.

However, at the beginning of 2019, Suffolk County Council announced the existing project was being halted due to unforeseen costs, changes to the bridge design, and the exhaustion of funding options.
