Year 13 students in Norwich have been given valuable advice on job-seeking skills at a workshop delivered by local accountancy firm, Price Bailey.
The event was arranged by Price Bailey’s Enterprise Adviser for Hellesdon High School, StJohn Richardson, as part of the New Anglia Enterprise Adviser Network.
Rosie Warnock, Career Lead of Hellesdon High School, worked with Jo Atkins, Resourcing Manager, and Lewis Bailey, Resourcing Adviser at Price Bailey, to deliver the workshop to sixteen Year 13 students aged 17 and 18 who were not considering going onto Higher Education after their A Level exams. The event included workshops for:
- Effectively looking for jobs and hints and tips for job applications
- Myths and facts about CVs together with suggested do’s and don’ts
- Plans for preparing for an interview / ‘what is your USP?’
- Researching the employer and their employee programmes and career progression
Finally, each student was offered the opportunity to have a mock interview with Jo or Lewis.
The New Anglia Enterprise Adviser Network recruits senior business leaders to work voluntarily with schools, supporting them to develop and enhance their business engagement plans. There are currently more than 80 Enterprise Advisers in Norfolk and Suffolk. The ambition of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership is to have an adviser in every school and college in the region by 2020.
Jo Atkins said: “Applying for jobs, preparing a CV and attending interviews can be a very daunting process when you’re just starting out, so we aimed to provide the students an insight into what employers look for and how to best present yourself in today’s highly competitive market.”
Rosie Warnock said: “The school wanted to give some practical support to students in our Sixth Form who have decided not to pursue university applications and who are looking to find jobs at the end of their studies here.
“The session gave them a really useful insight into the methods used by employers to recruit staff. There were some really useful tips on how to put together a CV which stands out from the crowd and several students had mock interviews, which they found really helpful and constructive.”
